Walk down an alley and enter a marvelously upscale burger joint which has I believe the best burgers I've ever eaten. Get the double cheeseburger with the fired egg and fries along with a side of their Mornay sauce and you'll be in heaven. Cocktails are a bit pricey (it is NYC), but you can get some pretty decent beers for $8. Service is excellent and if you get one of the circular booths that back up to the windows you'll have a surprisingly spacious area for a NYC restaurant. Great job Au Cheval!

Excellent burger - haven't had the one at 4 Charles to compare but it's hard to believe anything can top the burger here with the criminally decadent bacon on top. Fries were good, aoli was excellent. Wedge was also amazing (common factor was that fabulous bacon.) and whipped potatoes were good but so full by the end that I may just skip that next time.

Food here is always spot on! Must haves are the double cheeseburger with bacon, Caesar salad and the steak frites! I will say the bacon has definitely shrank since last going. The service is amazing and timely. Perfect date night spot!

Made famous in Chicago and now it's a super hot spot in NYC as well. A coveted place to get into and reservations are a must. In fact, time a month in advance to secure these so be mindful of that if you are looking to dine here. Otherwise, you're waiting in the corner coffee nook eyeing your text messages for 1-3 hours on the walk-in line. (Or you can wait downstairs for that text, at the bar, and start off with some drinks). The burgers are their most popular item and unlike other restaurants, they actually only have two cook temperatures - medium or well. That was a shocker for me. Per my waiter, it's because the patties are thin and seared. Duly note: all standard burgers are actually double patties (or you can order a triple) and they especially encourage extra toppings. Seems they like to add fried eggs to everything! (They suggest it on the burger, on the fries, on the potato hash, etc). I'm an egg fan anytime of the day so that was cool to see. But I actually didn't order an egg with my burger this visit since I ordered with the intention of sharing. For the carnivore that I am, I was really surprised by the burger size. No complaints here. But I do normally like my burger simple, not stacked with ten condiments so that I can enjoy the taste of the pure meat but I do love a great cheese to go with. Because I was sharing, I had to order this burger with the thick cut peppery bacon and avocado. Bacon was impressive but I frankly would've liked it separate from the burger just because it was a good piece of bacon. This was a tasty burger with the brioche bun. But being a simple beef patty doesn't win best burger in NYC for me. So yes, Au Cheval has a good burger but it's not THE burger. Moving on, the other reason I ventured here was to try their steak. I've read that they serve a large porterhouse but it tends to be dry so I didn't get it. I opted for the 16 oz Chicago cut ribeye. Usually the best cut for texture since it's most tender and this steak did not disappoint! Cooked with an herbed marrow butter and served with a side of bearnaise sauce. This dish was the dish, we enjoyed far more than the burger. It was cooked medium and boy was it tender. Light marbling and not too fatty overall. We opted for a side order of the silky whipped potatoes to go with this. Whipped with garlic confit and chives. It was a perfect pairing, naturally so. This dinner was for a celebratory meal so we had to have dessert! (We were really getting full but I insisted). Key lime pie was our dessert of choice. It was topped with a mound of cream; sweet and only slightly tart with a graham cracker crust. It was good, not particularly memorable but it was good. The restaurant actually knew (and remembered) we were celebrating a birthday; the hostess saw my notes on the reservation. She was very warm and friendly I should add, when she wished my companion a very happy birthday before getting us directed to our table at the start of the evening. Our waiter surprised us with a complimentary vanilla ice cream sundae and chocolate syrup after bringing the pie. Candle and all. That was really nice of the restaurant to do. Mind you during this whole dinner service, we never felt rushed to leave even though the lines of people waiting to dine just got longer and longer. In fact the table next to us, turned over twice while we were still there. (I even ordered a burger to go during my dinner service so that I could bring one to my hubby to try). It was ready by the time my dessert was almost done and we were ready to pay the check. Much appreciated that the dinner service was so smooth. I'm honored to post this as my 999th Yelp review.

Had to check this place out because of all the hype. Didn't make a reservation but we got seated right away on a Monday night. We tried double cheese burger which is famous as best burger in America. I wouldn't say it's best burger in America but it was pretty good. We had salad and marrow as starters and the bone marrow with toast was amazing. They were quick to serve and we didn't have to wait long. It was full house on a Monday night and I'd say it's a pretty good spot to date or handout with friends.

We had a GREAT time celebrating my daughter's birthday. Even though we didn't have a reservation, we didn't have to wait too long. The food and the wine list were excellent. Very cool place to celebrate anything. I recommend Au Cheval to my friends whenever they visit NYC.

I had been wanting to try Au Cheval for a while, after seeing photos of their famous burger with added bacon and egg. I came here at around noon on a Saturday and it was pretty easy to get a table with no reservation, although I did come alone. The interior was nicely decorated, with a rustic feel about it, and the servers were friendly. The burger was thick, especially with the added bacon and egg. I liked that the brioche bun was soft, and the patty was nice and moist even though it was a smash burger (a lot of smash burgers I've had tend to be dry, unfortunately). The runny egg and bacon also helped the burger taste creamy and fatty and moist. However, I found the patty too salty, to the point where I had to gulp down several cups of water. Probably a personal preference but I probably would have preferred a single patty to a double, since the added bacon and egg already makes it extra heavy and the patty itself is so salty. I wonder if a few more pickles would have balanced it better.

My expectations were high and they were met in every way. I honestly had a big lunch that day so I was zero hungry when I arrived at Au Cheval. But we ordered anyways since we were visiting NYC and I was so happy I didn't cancel my visit! I mostly came for the double cheeseburger, which was amazing, but the star of the evening was the Mac n cheese for sure, with chunks of tender and thick bacon on top. Oh yes, make sure you order something with bacon on it. They actually have a lot of options, but the chopped salad and the Mac n cheese... We were so full after the feast but we managed to appreciate the key lime pie just as much as much, so leave a room for it.

The world doesn't need one more opinion about how Au Cheval's burger is one of the greatest ever served; I'm just offering my humble validation that the hype is real. The restaurant offers more of an upscale steakhouse feel; eating a burger feels sexy in their capacious Tribeca dining room. I took my wife here for her birthday, per her request; the French fries topped with mornay sauce and an egg, plus the Caesar salad, was as hearty and delicious starters as you could ask for. We still managed to crush our cheeseburgers, redolent of butter, within minutes of arrival at the table. The double cheeseburger, no alterations, will take you to heaven, but adding bacon is hard to resist. The bacon strips are a meal in their own right.

If i could eat the cheeseburgers from here everyday and not have a heart attack best believe id be in there with assigned seat. I came to Au cheval the first time by myself. The second time i brought my wife and new born baby because thats what i do. Put the fam on to amazing places to eat. To begin the place is in a shady location (but in a good way) the vibe inside is cozy and a little busy. But thats good its free entertainment. I started with the wings and i really hope these wings become a hype because they are f**king delicious. And not no malnourished chicken wings either, were talking ostrich size wings. I also ordered a side of garlic mash. Smh all i could do is smh. Because its creamy garlicky buttery greatness. The cheese burger goes with out sayin. But ill tell you anyways. Its art work. With the sunnyside egg is just something you enjoy from start to end. Unfortunately i never got a chance to snap pic of my meal. But 3rd times a charm
